Convert IMG to ISO on Windows 7

In order to mount an image file on VirtualBox, I needed to convert an IMG image file into an ISO format (VirtualBox does not support mounting IMG files). There seem to be a myriad of applications available for this purpose; many of them commercial or at least shareware.

With OSFMount I found a free and handy tool for this purpose. Download and install the software, then mount the IMG file you need to convert.

Right click the mounted drive and select “Save to image file…”.

Choose “RAW CD Image (*.iso)” and Voilà! You have an ISO file, which can be mounted by VirtualBox.

  1. No longer. The Supported File Extensions table at the website shows that it does not support writing .ISO files.

    • Thank you for your comment!

Did you test this and it didn’t work for you? Yes, on the website they say they don’t support ‘Writing’ to ISO images but I think you can still create an image, since there is a green tick in the column ‘Convert to Image file’.

  2. For some reaseon I can’t import the file into virtualbox, it gives me the message
“Could not get the storage format of the medium ‘C:\Users\Christian\Downloads\Camd64OS-20180117010102.img\ChromeOS.iso’ (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

    Fehlercode:VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)

Any idea how to solve this?

    • Hello! Thank you for your question! Maybe there is something wrong with the downloaded file? Also the path you are using looks a bit strangle to me: Camd64OS-20180117010102.img\ChromeOS.iso. Why is there both .img and .iso in the path! Hope this helps!

  3. I just tried it following the directions in the website and it seems to work. It did ask if I wanted to format my d: drive (no way!!!), but it appears to work as advertised. 5 stars.

  4. I tested it- working. Thank you for posting and thanks to aussie Passmark for providing the program!
    – It processes about 1 GB/ min depending on hardware, you can follow the progress by right clicking the created iso and view file size in properties but the window does not autoupdate.
    – After install the program folder can be copied and used elsewhere as a stand alone.
